Take a trip to Austria

Located in the heart of the Alps, Austria's territory is mostly made up of mountains, which makes it a favourite winter destination, with its many ski resorts and charming wooden chalets. But it would be a pity if you were to stop at this one cliché. The country has many other treasures: medieval castles, baroque churches, palaces and gardens, picturesque villages, clear lakes... You can, of course, start your trip in Vienna, a city whose beauty and charm will surprise you. For more details, see our page Destination Vienna with its guides.

Five ideas for guided tours in Austria

  • Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a picturesque village 80 kilometres from Salzburg , surrounded by a lake and mountains. Walking through its narrow streets, you will discover its flower-filled balconies and its church reflected in the Lake Hallstättersee. Take the funicular and you will reach the Skywalk, a panoramic platform above the void. From here you can enjoy a fantastic panorama of the entire region. For the more athletic, there is even the possibility of reaching the famous Rudolfsturm viewpoint via a steep path. Hallstatt also has the oldest salt mine in the world. If you want to discover all the secrets of the mine, you can take an Austrian tourist guide with you.

  • The Grossglockner route

The legendary Grossglockner route, which links the Salzburg region to Carinthia over 48 kilometres in the Hohe Tauern National Park, has 38 bends that offer stunning views at every turn. Viewpoints along the way make it easy to stop and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Beautiful hikes are also possible and organised on paths where you can meet chamois and marmots. At the end of your tour, you will reach the highest point of the park, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs Höhe, which overlooks Austria’s highest peak, the Pasterze glacier and the Grossglockner. Note that this route is only accessible from May to November.

  • The Saint-Florian Abbey Library

The St. Florian Abbey Library, just outside Linz, can be considered one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, in the world. It is located in a magnificent and magical baroque abbey built in the 11th century and where canons still live. There are 150,000 old books here, the oldest dating from the 5th century. The books are arranged in a dozen rooms throughout the monastery.

  • The Krimml waterfalls

Go to the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Pinzgau Valley in Salzburg. Here you can admire Europe’s highest waterfalls, which rise to 380 metres. Enjoy the many viewpoints as you climb along a perfectly laid-out trail to the highest waterfall in Krimml. In addition, the rest of the park offers beautiful walks on 4 km long trails, where you can reach the beautiful Wildgerlossee lake in the middle of the mountains. A magical experience!

  • Graz

Austria’s second largest city is located in the province of Styria. It combines modern architecture with ancient monuments. First of all, climb the Schlossberg, which offers a magnificent view of the whole of Graz. And why not take a trip back to the time of the knights in the Landeszeughaus museum where 32,000 pieces of armoury are on display? The historic centre is very pleasant, especially the beautiful Hauptplatz with its typical Austrian houses. An ideal spot to taste a local speciality or have a drink.
